Penn State THON...FTK!!!

I wrote this February 2008. It still holds true today and it's the best thing I've ever written about. Please read this story and open your eyes to the most important weekend of the year for scores of families at the best place on earth....

She sits tall and vivacious on the shoulders of a student, and from the electric grin on her face to the sparkle of her big blue eyes, she looks as if she has just unwrapped her dream doll house on Christmas morning. But no, it is not Christmas, a birthday, or even the perfect present making this child so elated. She is at Penn State’s THON for the fifth time, and this weekend’s 46-hour dance marathon meant so much more to the State College family than it ever has before.
Isabella Messina, the 6-year old daughter of Pat and Renee, and sister to little brother Jack, is the reason why.
This weekend marked the 36th anniversary of THON, the largest student-run philanthropy in the world that strives to assist the Four Diamonds families who have children receiving treatment for pediatric cancer at the Penn State Medical Center in Hershey. THON weekend is the culmination of a year of work toward helping these families. All that work paid off when a record $6,615,318.04 was unveiled yesterday afternoon to more than 700 dancers, 200 families, and a Bryce Jordan Center littered with students.
The Messinas are just one of the 2000 families that have been helped by the fund since 1972, and their involvement started five years ago.
On March 27, 2003, when Isabella was only 20 months old, she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. She was treated in the Hershey Medical Center for eight months, and received an early remission, meaning all signs and symptoms of her leukemia disappeared, and there were no abnormal cells in her blood. Despite this, and her positive attitude, her mother never felt like she could be off of her guard.
“It never goes away. Not a day went by that I didn't look over her skin for bruising or question fatigue or aches and pains in depth,” Messina said. “Isabella grew very tired of it and used to try to reassure me that she was fine and could explain any bruises she had.”
All throughout this time, Isabella was continually seeing doctors to have her blood counts checked and things started to look up as she entered her fourth year of remission. A fifth year would classify her as cured. Last November, however, at a routine checkup, her pathologist was weary of some atypical cells in her blood counts, and urged the family to get the labs redone.
The family planned to have the labs redone within two weeks but “didn’t make it that far.”
Two days after the check up, Isabella complained of pain in her legs at night, a symptom of Leukemia. She was rushed to Hershey where she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia.
“It was our worst fear,” Messina said.
Because of everything that has happened in the last four months, the THON experience this year has been a little different for the family.
Annual THON activities include a family picnic in Hershey in September, Harvest Day at Harner’s Farm in October, the THON 5K in November, the family carnival in December and the THON Hoops basketball game in January. Usually, the Messinas never miss any activities, but, “with the current circumstances, we only made it to Harvest Day this year,” Messina said.
The big event, as everyone knows however, is THON weekend.
“We were fearful that we might not be able to attend THON this year due to her bone marrow transplant, but we just found out it is scheduled in March.”
The bone marrow transplant will impact more than Isabella. Despite the odds of one and four, her little brother Jack is a perfect match for her. She will have to be hospitalized for a month after her transplant, and for the next three months she is required to stay within 15 minutes of the hospital.
Because the family lives in State College, and they want to maintain “as much normalcy as possible,” one of the parents will live in Hershey with Isabella, while the other will stay in the area with Jack.
“I am not sure how it is going to work out,” Messina said, “but we will make do as best we can.”
The Messinas receive a lot of help from the Four Diamonds Fund. They have been given medications that insurance was not able to cover, assistance with meal passes at the hospital while Isabella was inpatient and scores of gas vouchers for the 200-mile round trips to the Hershey Medical Center. Also a blessing for the family was a clinic that opened in State College, which helped cut down on the trips. During Isabella’s four years of remission almost all of her appointments were able to be held locally.
As every THON passes, the two children begin to grasp a little bit more about their situation.
“It is very different this time around,” Messina said. “We have Jack now to worry about too. More importantly though, is that Isabella is now 6, and everything required some explanation. The hospitalizations, medicines, hair loss, and why she could no longer attend school.”
It is a lot for a child to comprehend.
“She has been incredible,” Messina said. “She now understands much of what is going on and why. I try to explain what I can, and feel she needs to know in terms that she can understand.”
The organization that dances for Isabella is the Student Athlete Advisory Board, and every year, the dancers cannot get enough her.

“She is such a sweet kid,” said David Gray, an alumni and one of the SAAB dancers from last year. “She was so active herself, that it was hard for me to ever feel tired.”

The Messinas got ready for the big weekend with a pre-THON “Thanksgiving” dinner, which happened two weeks ago. It is a chance for them to get acquainted with the dancers, and for the dancers to get acquainted with the children.

Zoey Bouchelle, a senior and one of the five dancers from SAAB developed a quick bond with Isabella.

“She hung onto me all weekend,” Bouchelle said. “Looking down at her during the last few hours was the only thing keeping me on my feet… It was pretty amazing.”

The inspiration that the children and their families give the dancers is most definitely a two-way street, however.

“It is such a special weekend for us,” Messina said. “It is quite possibly one of the best times of the year.”

To all the THONers (especially Deece, Jackie, Kristie and Dtones), KEEP ON DANCING! Together Without Limits. I am so so proud to be a Penn Stater this weekend.

Weekend Recap, a Recipe and a Teaser!

This weekend, I went to Penn State.

The place my heart belongs. I love it up there for so many reasons. Autumn in Happy Valley is like no where else. The trees are brilliant colors, the air is crisp, the coffee tastes better, the town smells like booze-- oh wait, that's not one of the perks.
Alex got me a GPS because he loffs me, not because I'm directionally handicapped.
The town is alive though, and this weekend was homecoming, so you better believe it was hoppin. I arrived Friday afternoon with a plate of Cheesecake Stuffed Strawberries because I love my boyfriend THAT much.
Who knew the dining commons had such awesome taco salads?
We spent our weekend people watching, hitting up some of my favorite spots (Dunkin, Starbucks, the Creamery and Pickles), tailgating, taking walks and doing a whole lot of nothing--it was fabulous.
THIS is tailgate food. Blueberry pancakes with syrup, whip and fruit.
I had an opportunity to be in contact with a few companies that are going to send me samples this week and I cannot WAIT. I'm on a big health kick right now, and by that I mean I will probably still eat dessert every night but I might throw in a few more wellness-esque tips and tricks... oh and more pictures of oatmeal, as I was so inspired by Kath Eats Real Food: Tribute to Oatmeal. Holy cow, that lady loves her oats.
A big bowl for a big gal!
I made some this morning. Pumpkin Chocolate Chip oatmeal. You're going to love it so I'll give ya the recipe.

What ya need:
1/3 cup quick cooking oats
1/3 cup milk
1/3 cup water
1/2 banana, sliced
1/8 cup canned pumpkin
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp brown sugar
Chocolate Chips
Peanut Butter

What ya do:
1. Combine the oats, water, milk, banana and pumpkin over medium heat.
2. Let alone until bubbling. Once bubbling, start to whisk quickly and non-stop until oatmeal reaches desired consistency. Add vanilla and brown sugar (to taste).
3. Pour into bowl and top with peanut butter and sprinkle of chocolate chips. You will be full for hours!!
Anyway... this is us after a date night at TGIFriday and Penn State's Creamery.
Take me to get ice cream and have my heart forever.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough because I don't like creamery chocolate, shhh!
Vanilla Ice Cream for a Vanilla Guy... BOO-RINGGG
And, this past weekend my parents got home from Ireland. My mom also celebrated her 40th (yeah right) birthday. I won't tell them how old you are Ma! And for that, a cake is in order. It's baking in my oven as I type.

This cake will be incredible. It smells out of this world. And I tried the batter...again, out of this world. I can't wait to cut into it tonight and post about it tomorrow. If you have good taste, and you do-- you're here, then you will love this Butterscotch-Apple Cake.

Come back tomorrow for the incredible recipe-- Happy Tuesday!

Penn State Blue White

I spent the weekend at Penn State bar-hopping, tailgating, dining out and lounging in. I didn't eat well but my soul feels well fed by good friends, greasy food and memories from the best place on earth.

Texas Roashouse... hello heavy food. FABULOUS buttery rolls with cinnamon sugar butter. Oh my gosh.

Salad and potato skins? Hey, gotta give and take right?

At least it's roasted chicken... I could have gotten fried. And I got green beans! Which were gross so I didn't eat them...just more buttery rolls.

Tailgate food= yummy. Alex's roommate had one and this was a tasty roast beef sammy with pasta salad (plus a banana, brownie, and pretzels not pictured... oops). Nothin like sun and good food.

Allen Street Grill! A classy State College nook housed above the famous Corner Room. We were hidden in some random back room... got the crab artichoke dip for an app.... Not the BEST choice being that State College is probably four hours from any source of water with crabs in it.

I ordered the blackened steak wrap. If you're ever craving steak, get it in a sandwich or salad. It's much cheaper than a la carte! And ask for the dressing on the side... you'll save yourself hundreds of calories. Oh and don't order fries. Right... I didn't really eat a lot of them!!! I had to save room for my double fudge cookie dough chocolate blizzard from Dairy Queen. Ask Alex, I ate the whole thing. See, if you can't let your hair down and enjoy all the "fruits" of life (or fries, blizzards, etc) than there is no real fun.

Compared to it's usual fiber one for breakfast, half sandwich and fruit for lunch, nuts and yogurt for snack, and chicken, veggies and starch for dinner, my body is in a  bit of culture shock. A weekend off from the kitchen means unhealthier choices but definitely less headache. I miss the Valley!

Feasting Day

I couldn't take another mini-wheats shot... so I didn't. Coffee run before the soccer game. Toasted almond... pumpkin was better so another one later? I think so.

Lunch was at the Redifer, and being the creature of habit that I am, I went with the panini for the THIRD time. I'm telling you. This baby is good. Alex got a huge plate of sesame chicken. It's pretty good for campus cuisine. We had lots of little errands to do today. Treatment, moving my car, getting things together for surgery day etc... So there wasn't much down time minus a really nice coffee date...aren't we just adorabl....y annoying? We ran into Vegas, a girl from the team as she was off to dinner. McDonalds. Dinner of a true champion college athelete. Get it, girl.

We picked TGI Fridays for dinner because it's easy and has anything and everything on the menu. We split the cobb salad as an appetizer. It was really good actually but I hate olives and Alex doesn't like blue cheese crumbles so we had a lot of picking to do before we could eat it. It was worth it though. For my meal I got the Jack Daniels chicken with mashed taters and green beans. I really liked the sauce and even though I had the great idea of eating half and saving half, I just ate the whole thing. Once again, brownies and ice cream for dessert. I finally got my own. Turkey Hill caribou tracks. It is pushing up near edy's in my opinion. It's toffee flavored ice cream with caramel swirls and chocolate chunks. It's fantastic. We went to sleep pretty early for a 6:30 check in at the hospital...

I missed Penn State

The weird thing about Penn State is that 7:00 a.m. on a Saturday=drunken debauchery. I finally think I get to sleep in and BAM, tailgaters pass by the windows yelling about kegs. So, I was up a little earlier than I would have liked but it is what it is. No big deal. I had to get up a little early anyway, because I had to be at the game. Penn State Women's Soccer has such a LEGACY of being Big Ten Champs. 11 years strong. It's one of, if not the longest streak of any team in the NCAA. Pretty sweet to be a part of. Once a year, all the teams who won the championship get honored at a football game during half time. Boys don't eat like girls. There was little to eat, so it was mini wheats for breakfast. Mini wheats and percocet (for him, not me)! Alex drinks whole milk... I think it's foul. Hoorah for his roommates drinking 2%. Wow, I sound like such a prima donna. So that was breakfast.

On a side note, It's really awesome to be on the field, even though I can honestly admit I don't care that much about football. It was so good to see all of my former teammates. Nothing has changed. That's comforting. Midway into the experience I was starving. Literally hunger pangs.
Lunch was quiznos... it's been a while since I went there but I got the cantina chicken sammy and split chips wit Alex. The sammy had chicken, tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, and honey Bourbon mustard. Twas delightful. But really, I just wanted coffee... I converted Alex to a coffee drinker and I'm so excited he's up for it as much as I am. We sat outside Starbucks for about an hour just watching drunk kids from the football game stumbling and cheerleaders still sporting their uniforms.

Got hungry... made my go-to of graham crackers and peanut butter. Alex loves chunky so that's what I had but I definitely prefer smooth... most of the time. Sorry this post is so short by the way... I've been swamped.

Later, we had to change Alex's ace bandage and put him back into the brace... An hour and a half later, around 9:15 p.m. pizza and couch sounded like a perfect harmony so we retired early and did a whole lotta nothin. Pineapple pizza... obviously.

Pretty sure I gorged on my brownies and Ben and Jerry's Half Baked. Pretty sure I forgot the picture. Not on purpose of course....
